Day 4 - A Song That Makes You Sad

HA.

I could just hand you my iPod and all of my youtube playlists to answer this one.

However, I'll settle for Top 3 of the moment.

Day 2 - Your Least Favorite Song

my least favorite song, ever?

well, there's loads of songs I hate that I haven't listened to.

I'm looking at you, sick popular music.

But as for music I've heard.

This one. Hands. Down.

Amazing Grace should NEVER sound like this. I'm sorry.

Day 1 - Your Favorite Song

this is a dangerous question

I tend to hear this as "what is your favorite song right now"

this is it:

I am a newly converted but die-hard Passenger fan. Expect to find loads of his songs here in the coming month ;)

Saturday, October 5, 2013

that song you keep hearing about and you refuse to give in to popular opinion

and then of course, you have to accidentally stumble upon the chorus on the radio, and you end up joining the multitudes that love it.

tricksy radio.

american pie

This song shouldn't be a feel-good song to me. I mean, the story behind it is so sad! It was written after three musicians died in the same plane crash.

And yet, I can't help but listen to it all the time.

gackt

all this time

six on the second hand
to new year's resolution
and there's just no question
what this man should do
take all the time lost
all the days that I cost
take what I took and
give it back to you

all this time we've been waiting for each other
all this time I was waiting for you
we got all these words can't waste them on another
so I'm straight
in a straight line
running back to you

something to hit you right in the emotions

it's so stirring

and powerful

the conflicting and mingling agendas and yet they form a common melody

and yeah I technically posted this song before but I just really love Les Mis right now okay

i wanna see you be brave

I just

I don't listen to mainstream artists, really

I can't even spell the chick's name

But this song is gorgeous

christmas in september

I'm not even a Christmas-Music-All-Year-Round kind of person.

But this song, this version, just makes me so stinkin happy.

Don't it make you feel like dancing and hugging someone?

when the words become true

Have you ever discovered a song that wrenches your heart in a new way?

I learned this song over the weekend, and it is a beautiful song of worship.

what to do with the time that is given to us

Whether or not you've seen the films or read the books, this song is utterly moving. Just like the track Hope and Memory, which I heard and learned to love ages before ever watching the movies.

What's your favorite LOTR soundtrack?

renegade

The rest of the song would be nothing without the intro.

Complete ear happiness.

with our backs to the wall

An epic song that has nothing to do with love or relationships. It's a treasure these days.

i used to be my own protection

it's sad because of the instruments

it's sad because there's ash and winter and dissatisfied clouds and heartless wind

and it's even sadder when you realize it's about a funeral

and then you find out that the singer's dad died on a valentine's day

tie my handlebars to the stars so i stay on track

the absurd poetry of adam young's lyrics is glorious, and this song is particularly catchy

500 Miles

If you can listen to this song without marching, then you should fix that.

Plus if you know about it 'cause of Doctor Who, you really should be smiling hugely and marching in place as enthusiastically as Billie Piper.

album: quantum

did this make anyone else think of national treasure in the first 20-odd seconds?

besides that though, epica/trailer type music is awesome. who are  your favorites artists in the genre?

your guardian angel

the red jumpsuit apparatus is one of my top three favorite bands, ever.

this is probably their mellowest song, but it's gorgeous and oh so sad

anyone else like this?

*raises hand slowly*

epic anime music

It doesn't matter if you watch anime or not, this is an EPIC song.

plus the japanese(it might be german in this song I can't tell) language is just awesome anyway

does anyone else enjoy learning songs in languages you don't speak just to feel cool?

preacher

this song is literally almost perfect

when I sing it, I change "who learned to help themselves" to "who cannot help themselves"

I just like making things theologically correct

give us us free

just watched this film for the first time tonight.

among other things, I have huge respect for John Williams and his ability to sum up the redemptive and hopeful spirit of the film in musical notes.

it's quite unforgettable.

kings and queens

I honestly have no idea what this song is supposed to be about but it's grandiose and raw and makes me think of Marvel's THOR film.

And it shows up on all sorts of epic trailers so it has rather positive connotations for me.

Is connotations the right word for that sentence?

*shrug*

the four chord song progression

I think the four chord progression to music is like the standard the-knight-kills-the-dragon-and-they-all-live-happily-ever-after plot line to books.

It's straightforward, everyone knows it, and it's possibly overused.

Sure, it needs a little sprucing up, if you're going to use it. Needs a little originality. But there's nothing fundamentally wrong, and it still resonates with people.

What do you think?

i really wanted it to be a wedding

I saw the lyrics and chords for this song sitting on a friend's piano.

I've been trying to do it right
I've been living a lonely life
I've been sleeping here instead
I've been sleeping in my bed
sleeping in my bed

So show me family
All the blood that I will bleed
I don't know where I belong
I don't know where I went wrong
But I can write a song

I belong with you
You belong with me
You're my sweetheart
I belong with you
You belong with me
You're my sweetheart

I noticed that it was standard four chord progression, and since I had never heard the song, I imagined up the melody, then looked it up later at home.

I love falling in love with songs. And I love discovering them in atypical ways.

Ho Hey by the Lumineers. It's a hauntingly sweet song, with a beautiful music video as well.

However.

I just really, really, wanted the video to culminate in a wedding. Cause they're all in that building with the pretty lights and everyone looks nice and I just wanted to see a bride and groom laughing and happy in the middle of the crowd.

Ah well.

when theme songs happen

songs that weren't written for it

songs that just kinda were

and then something marvelous happens and that song will never NOT make you think of that certain something

(in case you don't know, these guys are bradley james and colin morgan, who play arthur and merlin respectively in the bbc show that broke everyone's hearts)

unofficial theme songs

love 'em

i love paramore

I had this song stuck in my head today and wanted to share. Hayley's voice is absolutely gorgeous and far as rock and punk pop goes, this band is just perfect.

Does anyone else find it curious that you can sing a song about being able to find words?

enjoying music

There's something incredibly satisfying about watching someone enjoy what they do.

Watching Kurt Hugo Schneider play the keyboard while hitting a gigantic drum is one of those things. Creating music is insanely kick butt and fun, and it's even better when it LOOKS almost as awesome as it must feel.

sad + sad = so sad

You said it, Youtube Commenter.

And yes, possibly sad but very true, I have a thing for some J-pop, K-pop, and other asianly-created things.

This totally awesome dude mashed up two gloriously beautiful and heartbreaking songs. My feelings of wonder and delight when I discovered his video will not soon be forgotten.

Song of the Caged Bird

Honestly, I'm no avid fan of Lindsey Stirling. Her covers are great, but they tend to bore me.

However, give me an original song and I'll give that way more respect, because it's a little window into the musician's own heart, and I love that.

Psychological Recovery....6 Months

Thanks to a very good friend of mine, I'm slowly being won over to the Sherlock Holmes soundtracks. Of course, I love Hans Zimmer's work and always have, but these scores aren't really my style.

However, this one is just pretty darn excellent and puts you in a wonderfully creative state of mind. Whatever you do while you're listening to it, you're bound to feel more epic and intense while doing it.

you know that you are--!

Even though I have no reason to tell anyone that they're as cold as ice (except the BBC), it isn't necessarily the lyrics that won me over to this song. It was the power in the performance, the punch to it, the piano intro, and the epic moment starting at about 1:47.

Classic rock is just fabulous, ok.

the cincher

you're not sure if you like the song or not

it's winning you over but you're still dubious

and then

OOOoooh OOOOhhhh Ooohhohohoh OOOOOOOOooOOOOooh!!!!

and that just cinches it and there's no unliking the song, ever.

because you can OOohoOOOHohohOOOOOOHhhhhoooohoh and that is a gift

and of course it doesn't hurt that the words are fabulous and the band is just great all around and the percussion is perfect and also the electric guitar

straight up violin madness

Before I saw this video, I would have told you that I play the violin when I'm thinking  and that I play it fairly well.

After watching this.

Well.

Nope.

And until I CAN play this, I will consider myself unworthy of my instrument.

Don't forget to pick your jaw up off the floor.

it's the associations

There's a lot of songs that I love, that I wouldn't have loved if I had stumbled across it on the radio, or some other rather insignificant way.

But if I see a great fanvideo for a show or movie I love, then by golly, that song that would have meant nothing to me now means a whole lot.

Most of the songs I listen to on a normal basis are ones I found through fan-created things like this.

And yes, most of them were because of Sherlock. Blame it on the BBC, baby.

What makes you fall in love with a song?

hello world, hope you're listening

There aren't words to convey how much I love this song. The words, the bittersweet, tender tone, the story of waiting and trials and love that it implies.

It's quite perfect.

AND THEN

AND THEN A DUET VERSION HAPPENS

and all is right with the world.

The duet is much more triumphant, but after being friends with the original for so long, I can totally appreciate a fresh take on it. What say you?

animus vox

I just can't get over this song

the 2:15 mark

utter

perfection

the whole thing is glorious, really

I think, if music could be called sexy, that little slide right there would be the perfect example

yesisaidsexybutidon'tplanonusingthatwordinanyothercontexteversojustdon'tbealarmed

bon jovi rocks, on occasion (more like every occasion)

You know those songs that take you back to a certain time?

This song came on shuffle on my iPod the other day, and it totally brought back memories of October-November last year; rainy nights and cold days and the camaraderie of a school play I was in. I was just learning to drive, too, and when I could, it was songs like this that I played in the car. I'm not the same person I was a year ago, and this song during the fall weather once again brings back the good memories of what life was like 12 months ago.

What songs make you think of this time of year?

love's right behind you

She wears a white dress
She's beautiful and vulnerable.

She sees the light and it's saying 'come back'
She's out the door but she hasn't left yet
There's still time, still a chance.

And I start believing her when she says that
The city's gonna save her love
Don't leave her I know just what she's looking for
He has it, but she doesn't realize it.

Oh but all she knows is a picture that keeps fading on
But I can't let her go that's why I'm telling her
He's persistent, he's persistent.

I wanna love you more
Than all of the things you wanted
Than all of the things you're not
It doesn't matter where she's been, what she's done,
he loves her even more than her dreams and beyond her failures
it's Christ-like and beautiful

You want to have it all
But you found it in the city
But the city doesn't talk
The city can't give it to you. Stop looking where it won't satisfy.

when literally, everything is perfect

it looks effortless

the tone is perfect

the recording quality is high

and your ears were never happier before in your life

Cello Suite No.1 in G

He isn't "performing." It doesn't feel like.

He just has something to say and he's telling you with four strings and a bow.

the one that wind and waves obey

Songs can get worn out.

But when the lyrics come back and hit you in a fresh way, when the lyrics become real...

that's when you are infinitely grateful for music, and music that tells the truth.

take a picture of the perfect place

sometimes it's the intro

sometimes it's the percussion

sometimes it's the cello

sometimes it's the epic music video because everyone needs a masked ball in their lives

sometimes it's the way he dives over to the piano

sometimes it's indescribable, but dang, you just can't help but love this song

Music is honest
       music tells lies

          lifts us up
Music

and music drags us
                              down

                                              music takes us far away
 and music brings us home

Whither to
             may a song
                   be found
